For anyone wishing to further their ability and to forge ahead in a career in travel journalism, I cannot recommend the Morris Journalism Academy highly enough. It is an engaging course that I found turned what was a hobby into a blossoming enjoyable career. I find that travel journalism is a speciality art form like no other and the course gave me an opportunity to look at my travel writing in an entirely different light.
I eagerly awaited my new assignments, to find out what tasks my tutor had set and how challenging they would be. I can’t say the same about the feedback but I always knew my tutor was the expert and took the good with the bad in good spirits. I was there to learn after all.
And learn I did in a most enjoyable way. I believe that when you find a course of learning that you enjoy immeasurably that can be a rare thing. My tutor gave me the courage to start my own writer’s website which as a prolific traveller has proved invaluable. He taught me to believe in myself and my ability and for that I will be eternally grateful.
I am predominantly writing for online companies after having submitted articles for HELPGOABROAD where I earned a small amount for each contribution. Get Lost Magazine is one of my favourite publications, and have had the pleasure of meeting the founder and publisher Justin Jamieson. He encouraged me to submit articles and as a result and am currently reviewing my work.
Contributing to online companies I found is a good way to “perfect my skill”. I can be as critical as I wish without the nerves of rejection. But I must say that seeing your first article in print gives you an immeasurable amount of pride in your achievement.
As mentioned previously, I travel abroad between four and six times a year in my capacity as a home-based travel agent. This, of course, provides me with an unending supply of stories, and while many may not be in a position to do this, there are many ways to bring travel destinations to life. So for those who would flourish in this field of employment but feel that they don’t get around enough, this course gives you the tools that enable you to start your journey without leaving home.
The course is structured to enable you to “tackle” it in your own time, something I found suited my schedule. But to sum up my experience, as an avid reader I now look at all text in a different way. Fiction or biography I compare descriptive writing which I would have once skimmed over to get to the end as fast as I could. Now I savour the delivery of each chapter and use this skill in my own stories, all thanks to my making a decision to join the Morris Journalism Academy, one that has changed my perspective on everything I see on my travels.
